Camp Future

Camp Future is the 2 month final period of the Development Instructor Program following the development work in Africa. The purpose of Camp Future is to complete the Development Instructor Program through a period with further studies and elaboration on the development work and outreach and information work.

Camp Future lasts 8 weeks and consists of:
2 weeks General Period
5 weeks Specific Period - Take Action and Fight Poverty
1 week Conclusion Period

The General Period
The outline of the General Period is as follows:
1st week: Coming back. Meeting with the Headmaster. Writing the final report. Meeting with the Teacher Counsel about the final report Making presentation at IICD about the work in Africa. Organize an evening program for the school about the country and project where you have worked.

2nd week: Individual meeting about the Specific Period.
Each Development Instructor will chose his/her position/task and get
ready for the Specific Period. Courses about the world today.
During the general period the Development Instructor also gets integrated in the usual common activities and responsibilities at IICD - morning courses, cooking, cleaning and evening programs.
The demands in the General Period must be complied with before the
Development Instructor can move on to the Specific Period.

The Specific Period is 5 weeks.
The headline for the Specific Period is “Take Action in the fight against poverty”. The purpose of the Specific Period is to use the gained experiences and knowledge to spread information, to educate and increase awareness among the general public about the conditions in Africa, the development work of Humana People to People and the need for action - as well as pointing out possible ways for people to be part of the global fight to end poverty.

Each Development Instructor will chose one of the positions offered by the Camp Future school for a period of 5 weeks. A list of 20 positions are written here. Each position has a clear result to be achieved within the planned time.

Conclusion
After having completed the Specific Period, the Development Instructor returns to the Camp Future school for a conclusion meeting and for a graduation ceremony. Each Development Instructor will receive a diploma for completing the Development Instructor program.

Where does Camp Future take place?
Camp Future takes place with base either at KNEC in Durban, South Africa or back at IICD. KNEC in Durban is for Development Instructors who wish to be part of developing Humana People to People’s work in South Africa in the Specific Period.

All other Development Instructors come back to IICD for Camp Future.

Camp Future Positions
Positions for the Specific Period at IICD. Each Development
Instructor chooses one:


1. Pedagogical suitcases for preschools. The task is to make connections and partnerships to fill a pedagogical suitcase for 10 preschools in Africa and find a way to get it to the projects for free.

2. Produce educational materials and introduce them in local schools.
The task is to produce a series of educational materials containing
experiences, photos, videos, information on what you have achieved and about important and relevant development issues - telling people how they can be part of fighting poverty.
Introduce the materials in 10 local schools and give the teachers ideas of how they can use them in their classes.

3. Get appointments with at least 5 colleges or libraries to have the exhibition there for a period of time. The task is to make a high quality exhibition that will be highly sought after with photos and information that clearly show the importance of being a Development Instructor and the development issues in the country in which you were a DI.
Take the exhibition on a tour to at least 5 different places and be there “live” to debate with and mobilize people.

4. Information through live exhibition. The task is to make a multitude of varied promotion actions with the aim of finding two new Development Instructors to follow in your footstep.

5. Two to follow your footsteps. Mobilize people through information in
the process.

6. Donations for your Project. The task is to raise goods or cash that are suitable for the work and initiatives for your project in Africa. Secure a way to get them sent to Africa.

7.  Bird's Eye View. The task is to edit the video shots you have made during the time at the project and make the end product an interesting and informative film that will motivate your audience. Show the film to at least 100 people. Make DVD copies to be used in promotion.
Place the video film on the Internet (e.g. You-tube)

8. Education is the Key. The task is to support the education of teachers-in-training at one of the Teacher Training Colleges.
Find sponsors who will give their money for this important aim.

9. Education for All. The task is to find partners who will pay to support 10 children to get their education at one of the projects of Humana People to People.

10. Presentations at colleges, high schools, churches and
universities. The task is to make connections with 25 colleges, schools, churches where you can give presentations about Africa and your experience of being a Development Instructor. The high number of presentations challenges you to become well articulated, professional and to touch people.

11. Information worker with Planet Aid. The task is to be an information worker at one of Planet Aid’s operations in the USA/Canada - producing and spreading newsletters and flyers, visiting site hosts, giving presentations, writing articles etc.

12. Workshops at the DRH Schools. The task is to prepare a one week workshop about essential skills and knowledge for DI’s and to travel to the four DRH Schools and implement it.

13. Information worker for the DRH USA. The task is to work together with the Educational Director in the USA and produce a variety of educational materials for all the DRH schools in the USA/St. Vincent.

14. Co-Teacher. The task is to take the position of CO-Teacher at one of the DRH Schools in the USA/St. Vincent with all that it takes in order to be part of training some of your fellow Development Instructors.

15. South America promotion. The task is to mobilize people for info-meetings in Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico or Brazil. Prepare and hold the meetings and get 5 enrolled.

16. Planet Aid School Program. The task is to work together with Planet Aid in their school program, giving presentations about development projects, Africa and recycling.

17. Clothes Drive. The task is to organize a clothes drive at an inner city school in Albany in cooperation with the Clothes Collection. Work together with the teachers, students and parents, make educational programs and organize the drive. The surplus is split between the school for a specific project to benefit the children and a project in Africa, that is decided on from the beginning.

18. Hundred ways to fight poverty. The task is to produce a booklet: “100 ways to fight poverty” - get it printed in 100,000 copies and hand them out to people in the USA.

19. Information worker with GAIA USA. The task is to be an information worker at one of the GAIA’s operations in the USA and spread information about the need to take action in protecting the environment and leave a CO2 neutral/positive footprint.

20. Poverty in the US. The task is to make an investigation on poverty in the US and produce an informative documentary - power point presentation, video, exhibition, poems etc. Make a presentation for the DRH schools and organize a debate of how we can take part in fighting poverty in the US.

21. Info-caravan. The task is to organize a 5 state caravan trip in a very visible van, bringing along information materials, movies, theater plays, happenings, artifacts.... and simply blow out the message “Take action and fight poverty”.

The list of positions will be evaluated and updated every quarter.

Planning Camp Future
Camp Future is introduced as a part of the Midway Meeting with the team after the 3rd months of training.
After being introduced to the Camp Future Program, the process of planning and arranging Camp Future begins.
At the end of the second period, the chosen position is confirmed.

Rules for participating in Camp Future
The Camp Future Program is compulsory in it structure and content.
Development Instructors who have received a scholarship or spent 12 months at the project in Africa will do their Camp Future at IICD.
Development Instructors going to Durban for Camp Future will do the Specific Period in South Africa.

Economy for Camp Future at IICD
The cost of the General Period is covered by IICD. Funds available for the Specific Period is 300 USD for each Development Instructor. If costs are higher, the Development Instructor can fundraise to cover
these.


Economy for Camp Future at KNEC
IICD will pay the tuition fee directly to KNEC for the Development
Instructors going to South Africa for Camp Future. The budget for the
specific period is planned together with the Camp Future teacher there.

HOPE

The devastation of HIV/AIDS can be seen everywhere. The epidemic has torn the fabric of society. Members for the HOPE program will work with the people of Angola in the fight against the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
