When I arrived in January I had many expectation of what I would complete while at E.P.F Chimoio, Mozambique for 12 months. After my extensive time with IICD I believe I better than most understood that the whole Humana experience is ultimately what I make it. Yet I did not make it all I could have and for this I am regretful and disappointed with myself. Not with standing all that I learned in these first four and a half months in Africa.
My mentality before was that it didn't matter wheather or not I contributed because the world would go on with or without me. The meat of what I learned is how to better govern myself, while balancing my personal needs with that of my professional. That I may need personal time but not at the unnecessary expense of those around me who depend on me.
In fact I learned that people DO DEPEND ON ME! I do recognize I still have a ways to go before this lesson becomes a completely integrated into my way of life.
All things considered, I believe I did contribute to the overall
development of the school, if not with the staff, certainly with some of the students of 2006. I like to think that at least my pedagogy courses and personal crusade for passionate teaching centered around the students who are being taught had some positive effect. After having spent 4 months at EPF I moved to Formigas du Future, which is a school for kids. My time at Formigas du Future has been highly enjoyable and personally rewarding to say the least. Working with the staff is a pleasure due to the unstoppable passion they have for their work and students. They are truly dedicated people who have a heart not only for the youth, also for the future of Mozambique. With out a proper education there can be no future! I have learned so much from all the staff about dedication, diligence, patience and sacrificing for what you believe. They even participate in extra-curricular after school programs. All of the teachers and staff were ready with a warm
smile to assist me in learning about their Mozambican culture.
We had many lively discussions about a variety of topics. I can say with assurance my Portuguese improved dramatically while at Formigas due to the unending help of the staff, students and teachers. I am thankful god allowed these magnificent people to enter into my life.
