September 21st, Jun and I did an investigation in Praça de Sé, Salvador. We met the girl who was selling the acarajé, one of the traditional foods in Salvador, on the road. Her name was Carla and she was 20 years old.
We asked her different questions:
Did she have any brothers or sisters?
-Yes, total 6.
What was her job?
-Selling acarajé, one of the traditional foods in Salvador.
How many hours dis she work per day?
-9 hours, from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M.
How much dis she earn per day?
-R$ 10 per day. This shop is not her property, but there is an owner. That way she gets only a small amount of the money.
Why did she want to work when she earned so little?
-Even though she didn't earn much, she thought it was better working than staying at home doing nothing. And also she says even though the money she earns is a small amount, she can still buy something (ex. Beans, Rice etc,,,) with her salary.
Did she go to school?
-Yes, she still goes to high school at night. She started elementary school when she was 8 years old, that's why she still studies.
Did she want to have children some day?
-Yes. She wants to have one of her own children and an adopted child.
Why did she want to have an adopted child?
-Because she thinks it's important to take care of the street children.
Did she like Lula?
-Yes, but at the same time she thinks he can contribute more to Brazil because some government employees steal from the public funds.
What did she think about Bolsa Familia?
-It's a good system but she thinks sometimes it doesn't work well, because some people don't need the governments' help and some people who really need it can't get it. Therefore she thinks it will be better to give students healthy food at the school than to give families money.
