If we fail to make solidarity

Dedication

"If we fail to make solidarity and a sense of social and environmental responsibiity the main driving force behind our human society then, quite simply, we will not survive. The egotism, individualism, greed and exclusive national interests that characterize and drive human behavior today can lead only to the extinction of our species. We are already heading down this path. At some point, it might bot be possible to turn back."

"To take the qualitative leap forward, we must give up our quest to become the lords and masters of creation, forgetting that we are not owners but only caretakers, which, after all, is no small thing. Only when we accpt the fact that we are caretakes and not owners and that we will one day be held to account for our stewardship will the grandeur of our humanity shine forth."

Miguel D'Escoto Brochman challenged the leaders of the 192 nations of the UN General Assembly with these words in 2009. D'Escoto, who served at President of the 63rd General Assembly for the United Nations, is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua, a Maryknoll Priest and founder or Orbis Press.
